# A Beautiful Type of Chaos: The Resurgence of Mixed Type

There is a captivating design trend making a powerful resurgence across the creative world: mixed type. To understand this modern fascination, one only has to look back at the early days of print. Historically, it was entirely common to see an array of four, five, or even six different fonts occupying a single layout. Nineteenth-century ephemera, from broadsides to advertisements, often leaned into what can only be described as typographic overload—yet it was executed in the absolute best way possible, capturing attention through sheer variety.


As the decades passed, design standards inevitably shifted. The prevailing wisdom and best practices moved steadily toward strict simplicity. The new rule of thumb dictated that designers should rely on just one or two carefully paired typefaces to achieve ultimate visual cohesion. In this era of clean, minimalist layouts, stretching or warping a text box was considered a cardinal sin of graphic design. Conformity and readability became the ultimate guiding principles, leaving little room for typographic rebellion.

However, the pendulum has swung back. Today, some of the most striking and interesting pieces of modern design are completely disregarding those rigid mid-century rules.


Contemporary creatives are bravely utilizing all kinds of different typefaces, fonts, styles, and approaches within a single design. By turning headlines and paragraphs into diverse visual playgrounds, they create an immense amount of visual interest. Instead of fighting for absolute uniformity, these designs lean into variety, proving that sometimes, breaking the rules results in a truly beautiful type of chaos.
